Toledo Symphony Performs at the Rosary Cathedral Sunday 1/24

Cathedral concert Sunday

The Toledo Symphony will continue its tradition of performing a major work by Anton Bruckner in Our Lady Queen of the Most Holy Rosary Cathedral, 2535 Collingwood Blvd., with a concert at 4 p.m. Sunday.

Stefan Sanderling will conduct the Austrian composer's Symphony No. 6. At just under 60 minutes, it's Bruckner's shortest and most rarely performed symphony.

To open for the orchestra, Masterworks Chorale, Toledo's premiere chamber choir, will perform two of Bruckner's 30 motets, led by artistic director Donna Tozer Wipfli. Although less well known than the symphonies, Bruckner's motets best express his deep Roman Catholic faith and his musical roots as an organist.

Tickets for the concert are $35 at 419-246-8000.

At 8 p.m. Jan. 29, the TSO will perform an all-Tchaikovsky program in a regional concert at the University of Findlay's Winebrenner Theological Seminary on the Hancock County campus.

James Feddeck, assistant conductor of the Cleveland Orchestra and music director of the Cleveland Youth Orchestra, will conduct the orchestra, with pianist Nareh Arghamanyan as soloist in Tchaikovsky's Piano Concerto No. 1. Opening the program will be a Polonaise from the opera Eugene Onegin, and the overture to Romeo and Juliet.

The concert is sponsored in part by Whirlpool Corp. Tickets are $10-$25 at the UF box office, 419-434-5335.

Conductor Alexander Michelthwate will lead players from the Toledo Symphony through works by Mozart and Strauss during the Mozart and More Series concert at 7:30 p.m. Jan. 30 in the Franciscan Center of Lourdes College, Sylvania.

The overture to Mozart's opera, Abduction from the Seraglio, will open the concert with the Strauss Suite from Le Bourgeois Gentilhomme to follow. Mozart's Symphony No. 41 will round out the evening of music.

Tickets are $29-$33 at 419-246-8000 or toledosymphony.com.

Bowling Green State University voice faculty members will perform in a free concert at 3 p.m. Sunday in the Toledo Museum of Art Great Gallery.

Organist and Wittenberg University faculty member Trudy Faber will be in Ottawa Hills for a free recital on dance in music by J.S. Bach at 4 p.m. Jan. 31 in St. Michael's in the Hills Episcopal Church, 4718 Brittany Rd.

Her program will include Bach's Fugue in G Minor, BWV 578, Jesu, meine Freude, BWV 610, Prelude and Fugue in C Major, BWV 547, In Dulci Jubilo, BWV 608, Jesus Christus, unser Heiland, BWV 666, and others.

A new wrinkle will be the opportunity for audience members to learn and practice Baroque dance. The concert is sponsored by the Toledo Chapter of the American Guild of Organists.

Singers are invited to join the University of Toledo Community Chorus, which rehearses and performs under the direction of UT music professor Stephen Hodge. For the choir's April concert program, Hodge has selected Handel's Utrecht Jubilate and works by David Brunner and K. Lee Scott.

Rehearsals begin at 7 p.m. Monday in the UT Center for Performing Arts. Parking passes are supplied. New members may join through Feb. 8. For more information call 419-530-4588.
