TSO's classics program honors Vivaldi's 'The Four Seasons'

The Toledo Symphony will continue its Classics Series with a pair of 8 p.m. concerts Jan. 15 and 16 in the Toledo Museum of Art Peristyle.

The program is titled "The Four Seasons" in honor of the beloved Vivaldi suite. Principal violinists Kirk Toth, Naomi Guy, Merwin Siu, and Rita Lammers will take turns as soloists in the four movements, accompanied by keyboard and strings.
Also taking center stage for J.S. Bach's Brandenburg Concerto No. 2 will be trumpeter Thaddeus Archer, oboist Kimberly Bryden Loch, and recorder artist David Dyer.
Advancing the program into the 20th century will be eight TSO wind players performing Igor Stravinsky's Octet.

A few tickets remain for the third in the Blade Chamber Series concerts at 7 p.m. Sunday in the Toledo Club, where works by Mendelssohn, Schubert, and Franz Strauss will be performed by Sandra Clark, Nancy Lendrim, Siu, Michael Boyd, Damon Coleman, Frances Renzi, Toth, and Martha Reikow.
The Sono Novo Chamber Ensemble will perform piano quintets by Borodin and Schumann in a 7 p.m. performance Jan. 15 at Trinity Episcopal Church, One Trinity Plaza downtown.
Violinists Cecelia and Priscilla Johnson, violist Susan Schreiber, cellist Jim Anderson, and pianist Wayne Anthony will present Borodin's Piano Quintet in Eb Major and Schumann's work, also in Eb Major.
Tickets are $12-$15 at the door.
The Toledo Junior Youth Orchestra will present its Winter Concert at 3 p.m. Jan. 17 in the Peristyle. Under the direction of David Oliver and Betsy Bennett-Barth, young musicians from dozens of area junior high and middle schools will perform a free concert, offering a preview of tomorrow's music makers today.
The Metropolitan Opera kicks off its Live in HD broadcast series this month with a performance of the Strauss comic opera, Der Rosenkavalier, at 1 p.m. Saturday in the Cinemas De Lux Maumee, 1360 Conant St., Maumee. James Levine conducts the opera with a cast headed by sopranos Renee Fleming and Susan Graham, plus Kristinn Sigmundsson and Thomas Allen. (Encore screening is set for 6:30 p.m. Jan. 27.)
The Met's brand new production of Carmen has Elina Garanca in her Met debut in the title role and Roberto Alagna as Don Jose. Yannick Nezet-Seguin conducts this Bizet favorite.
Screening is at 1 p.m. Jan. 16 in the Maumee cinemas, where an encore will be presented at 6:30 p.m. Feb. 3.
Tickets are $15-$22 at the box office.
The Toledo Piano Teachers will be hosts for a program, Teaching Special-Needs Students, at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday in St. Andrew United Methodist Church, 3620 Heatherdowns Blvd. The program is free to the public. Information: 419-322-4643.
Bowling Green Parks and Recreation and the College of Musical Arts at Bowling Green State University are teaming up to present the fourth annual Brown Bag Music Series this winter in the Simpson Building, 1291 Conneaut Ave., on campus.
Six lunchtime concerts featuring BGSU music students will be offered Jan. 22, Feb. 5 and 19, March 19 and 26, and April 9. Music will begin at 12:15. Drinks and dessert will be available for purchase starting at 11:45 a.m.
Lourdes College Chorus is seeking new members for 2010. Community and college singers are welcome to join in 6 p.m. rehearsals and varied performances of classics to contemporary beginning Wednesday.
The chorus will collaborate with the Sylvania Community Orchestra for a performance Feb. 24.

The Christian Festival Choir and Orchestra are seeking people who love to sing and play for rehearsals at Reformation Lutheran Church, 4543 Douglas Rd., and a concert at Maumee Performing Arts Center entitled EXALTATION 2010.
