Community Music LessonsThe TSO has been providing free music lessons for 16 years, supporting underserved individual young musicians, students in select schools, and residents at the Lucas County Youth Treatment Facility. This program, although in existence for more than a decade, is the TSO’s most under-recognized, yet potentially most valuable community resource. Music In Our SchoolMusic In Our Schools is meant to support music programs in schools, focusing on in-depth, sustained work with student and teachers. This program reflects the deep and sustained mentorship opportunities that the TSO longs to have with students and teachers. The TSO staff’s enthusiasm and sense of connection and commitment to this program is palpable, as the underlying principles of Music In Our Schools closely align with the core values of the organization. Side by Side ConcertsSide by Side concerts allow for connection with the students in order to develop authentic mentorship opportunities and to increase impact on individual young musicians and on the ensemble as a whole. School of musicThe Toledo Symphony announces the opening of the School of Music. Students as young as two work with Symphony musicians to develop their musical talents. Through private instruction, group classes, and enrichment activities, each child and parent experience the transformational power of music while learning and growing together. Enroll today! Young Artist’s CompetitionCompetitions for young musicians is a way for the Toledo Symphony to support talented young musicians the community. The Young Artist’s competition winners’ most valuable prize is the opportunity to perform with the TSO at a youth or community concert. The Toledo youth orchestraThe TYO brings together 140 of the most talented students from Northwest Ohio and Southeast Michigan in an atmosphere of musical excellence. The students are led by Dr. Kenneth Thompson from Bowling Green State University and Assistant Conductors Bryan Troutman and Mark Irwin of the Toledo Public Schools, and meet regularly with TSO musicians for clinics and sectionals. Spring auditions for the TYO will take place on May 17, 18, 19 and 20 from 4:00-6:30 pm at Symphony Space in Toledo. For the entrance audition, students will be asked to prepare and perform: 1. major scales – up to four sharps and four flats 2. solo or etude – (does not need to be memorized) Students wishing to schedule an audition, or who might have questions about the auditions are encouraged to contact the Orchestra Manager, Mrs. Dorothy Coats at 419-882-1953.
